CFS and HARP Forge Wood Weekend 2012 18-20th May For the 4th year in a row we are joining our friends at HARP (HomelessAction Resource Project) for a back to basics camping weekend in ForgeWood.There will be 10 people from CFS joining 10 people from HARP. 10 June 2012 Girls Weekend Reunion As discussed at the end of CFS Girls weekend 2012 we are having a reunion!It doesn't matter if you were at the girls weekend in body or just spirit. If you are a woman and part of Church From Scratch you are invited to come along on 10th June from 7pm for a BBQ. We're hoping it will be a long, relaxed, sunny, early summer evening with chatting, eating and sharing Jesus together. Summer Camp

‘Missional’ weeks – stories to share? The Wednesday group, with a little help from one or two others in CFS, gathered 8 people together last Saturday to strip wallpaper from the hall stairs and landing of a house in southend for a friend. It was a good time together and apparenlty accomplished "more than expected" What about your group – are there stories to share of good work going on that tells of the love of God in practical ways? How about sharing them on the weekly news so that we can all be encouraged? ( email parsons.kl@googlemail.com)

Monthly gathering – Sunday 13th May Please put the date in your diary now as we prepare to meet with Jesus and one another on Sunday 13th May. We expect this will be 4-6pm but the times will be confirmed next week. We are hoping that this will be a baptismal service, so please do pray for those preparing for baptism and for the practical arrangements. Summer Camp

Telling the CFS story At our partners’ meeting last week, we started creating a ‘timeline’ diagram on a long roll of wallpaper, adding our stories that together make up the CFS story over the 10 years of the church. I will be bringing this roll with me to visit groups or to gatherings and inviting you to add as much as you like, as we work up to celebrating our 10th birthday later this year. So start thinking now about the key events that you have been part of (or seen) that mean a lot to you and will help us to remember and give thanks to God for 10 years of church.

‘Missional’ weeks – stories to share? The two Thursday groups have been combining efforts and working together as we are looking outward this month, transforming a garden in Shoebury one week and helping demolish a garden shed for a neighbour last weekend. We go back for some decorating soon. What about your group – are there stories to share of good work going on that tells of the love of God in practical ways? How about sharing them on the weekly news so that we can all be encouraged? ( email parsons.kl@googlemail.com)

God created the planet - maybe think of ways to "go Green" to help look after the planet's resources. For example we all have appliances which sit there waiting for us to use them. Unless they are switched off or very ecofriendly themselves this will use electricity and contribute to your bill and to using resources. - SO switch them off ( not the fridge obvioulsy!) until you need them,.

Donate your electrical items
We are now selling working electrical items - have a clear out and bring them down to the shop. Thanks to two of our volubteers, Rick and Richard who have done the course to qualify to test them before sale. No big things like fridges and no old TV's please as they just don't sell unless they are flatscreen ones.

For the 4th year in a row we are joining our friends at HARP (HomelessAction Resource Project) for a back to basics camping weekend in Forge Wood.

There will be 10 people from CFS joining 10 people from HARP. Friday 20 April - Kids Club / Youth Club Our Kids / Youth Clubs start again for the summer term this Friday at Clarence Road Baptist Church, 6pm for 5-11 year olds and 7-9pm for those at secondary school. Please do pray for members of our extended youth team (now shared with Avenue Baptist Church) as we work with kids week by week: Alex, Ami, Dave, Dean, Donna, Maz, Michael, Nikki and Ivan, with Dan, Isla and Mandy joining us when they can.

Tuesday 24th April Partners’ meeting - 7.30pm (not 7.45 as it says on the calendar) at Shared Space. Every few months in CFS we have a partners meeting, open to everyone but particularly for those of us committed to Jesus, his church here and to Southend. So the invitation is for YOU! We will provide some baked spuds and simple toppings but if you want to bring something extra to share for supper that would be welcome. After eating together, we will get involved with Jesus and one another, thinking about a number of things including:· Helping Ivan as he starts to write bits of the past 10 years of the CFS story
· Sharing the brilliant ideas our groups have come up with for looking outward in April/May
· How can we support the church planting work that Peter leads on our behalf
· Practical ways to be with Jesus in everyday life

Bill Pearson
The funeral arrangements are now confirmed. This will be held on Friday 20 April 2012 at 11 a.m. at Southend Crematorium, Sutton Road and afterwards at Leigh-on-Sea Constitutional Club, Elm Road, Leigh-on-Sea. Bill’s daughter Jean writes: “As Dad would have wanted, we would request that the service will be family flowers only. Bill Pearson
Many of you will know Bill who was a member of the church for many years and part of the group led by Alex and Nikki. Bill died following an operation last week aged 81. We are in touch with his family and when we have details of his funeral we will pass them on. Please do pray for his family, particularly his sister, son and daughter.

CFS Awayday last Saturday
It was great to have over 45 of us for the away day which included a brilliant pop song quiz (ask someone who went how that linked to the Bible!) and lots of other activities and ways to help us get into the Bible. A big thanks to Annie, Maz, Dan, Michael and especially guest Rich Shorter for helping us with the day. Rich is a friend of CFS and planting a church in Harrold Hill near Romford. Alison

Matt and Alex Simpson and their family
They have been with us for the past few days, learning from CFS as part of Matt’s training to be a Church of England vicar. Thanks to all who helped make their stay with us. Have you noticed the increasing number of people from around the UK, visiting us over the last few years? They are often asking the question, what can church look like to be relevant in our changing world. Part of our role is to help others train and think through new ways of being church.

Become a Partner in Church from Scratch for 2012
This is one way we commit to Jesus, to each other in CFS, and to our town for the year ahead. Those making this commitment are known as Partners and it is these people who together take the big decisions on behalf of our whole church. At the moment there are 52 Partners in the church. Monthly Gatherings It would be good for us to discover more about our town and one way of doing so is to move the venue of our monthly all-age gatherings to different places, which will remind us of things we can pray for (other churches? other faiths? people in need?). To be suitable places they need to be large enough to hold 40-50 people, be close to main bus routes and be accessible for people with disabilities. Baptism - Baptism - So who’s up for it? Being baptised is a major step – it means that from that point you have decided to make Jesus’ values your life choices. It’s the start of a whole new way of living, so it’s important to make a decision you will live with. For that reason, we are giving the people who are praying and thinking about baptism a little while longer before warming up the water! We will not now be baptizing at Easter but will look at a date not too long afterwards (for Easter events see elsewhere on this update). The Passion Experience - Easter text messagesWe are not running a story-telling text message scheme this Easter as many others are now starting to do things like this. But, but, but.... watch this space for a new scheme later in the year. We are currently in conversation with Premier Christian Radio about possibilities. This Easter we are working with some churches so it can happen in Welsh! And there is likely to be a scheme in New Zealand.

Church receives award for work with homeless -We've received funding and an award in recognition for our work with the homeless from the Queen's representative in Essex.

Fair Trade - some information about what is meant by Fair Trade :Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

The Fairtrade minimum price defines the lowest possible price that a buyer of Fairtrade products must pay the producer. The minimum price is set based on a consultative process with Fairtrade producers and traders and guarantees that producers receive a price which covers the cost of sustainable production. When the market price is higher than the Fairtrade minimum price, the market price is payable.

The Fair TRade Premium is money paid on top of the Fairtrade minimum price that is invested in social, environmental and economic developmental projects, decided upon democratically by a committee of producers within the organisation or of workers on a plantation. http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/what_is_fairtrade/faqs.aspx

Company please? This coming Sunday morning at 10.30am, Ivan will be speaking at Sockett’s Heath Baptist Church near Grays while Peter is at Leigh Road Baptist Church. Either would be glad of your company if you were free to join them so that their visit is truly by Church from Scratch (not just them).

The Girls had a great weekend. The food was good, the weather amazing and God was with us. There were 3 areas to spend time in, the creative zone, the refelctive zone and the social Zone.

Home Mission Fund – we mentioned a few days ago about this fund, which generously supports the work of CFS with a grant of just under £20,000 a year. The application for 2013 has now gone in. This is not an automatic thing – grants can go down, so your prayers would be very welcome! If you want to know more, ask Peter.

Girls Weekend Friday 24th – Sunday 26th February 2012

The Girls Weekend is upon us with less than a week to go. If you are one of the 28 women coming you should have receieved a letter or email giving you more details about the weekend including sleeping arrangements. Postcard from Uganda I (Alex) had a lovely surprise when a postcard from Kezia arrived this morning, she wrote to say thank you to everyone who contrbuted to the parcels we sent to her at Christmas. She wrote... As nobody put their names on the presents I dont know who to thank! But thank you all so much for all the Christmas presents you sent - I loved opening them all on Christmas morning and it made you all feel less far away.....

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.
Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion by Rome. This is believed to have taken place in Roman occupied Jerusalem.
The Christian churches that observe Lent in the 21st century (and not all do significantly) use it as a time for prayer and penance. Only a small number of people today fast for the whole of Lent, although some maintain the practice on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is more common these days for believers to surrender a particular vice such as favourite foods or smoking. Whatever the sacrifice it is a reflection of Jesus' deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline.

Girls Weekend Friday 24th – Sunday 26th February 2012

It’s nearly upon us, have you paid Alison your deposit?
BOOK YOUR PLACE NOW….The Girls weekend is booked for 24th -26th February. We are planning a low key, relaxed weekend where we can enjoy each other’s company while creating space for God to speak into our lives. We hope the weekend will be full of laughing, chatting, chilling and listening. It will be held in the Youth Hostel in Kent that we went to last year.
The weekend costs £50 for those in families with a regular income or £28 for concessions. This includes all accommodation and food for the weekend. Please let Alison know if you want to come and give her a deposit of £10 ASAP. The full balance should be paid by the 19th February.
We hope you are just as excited as us about enjoying each other’s company and seeing what God will do in and through us.

The Story of Church from Scratch (so far….)
Many of you will know that, like Dan, I do some part-time study at Spurgeon’s College – a place where people from our family of Baptist Christians go to explore the Bible, learn from wise scholars and try and work out what Jesus thinks about how we should live.
To finish my course there, I need to write quite a long report about Church from Scratch. The aim is to look hard at what makes our church so different and to ask whether the same approaches we use might be useful to new churches starting up anywhere else in the world.
One approach I want to use is to ask if some of you would be willing to tell me your part in the Church from Scratch story:· How you first found the church?· Is this is your first contact with church or if you have been part of several?· What makes you stay?· What’s different or special about CFS?· What do we do well or what could we do better?
You may have been part of something that happened in our church that you think sheds some light on what our church is like (good or bad). This might have been a community group you were part of starting-up or maybe it was one of our Summer Camps / Forge Wood? Maybe you and others helped to care for someone who was ill (or others cared for you)? Maybe it was some friendships that helped move you closer to Jesus?
Well I’d love to hear from you if you have a story to tell: just you or with others. You sharing your story with me might be a great help in writing my report and finishing my course. I’d be happy to supply the tea and cake (we have to do this properly!) and maybe I’d ask you some questions to get the full picture. I’ve already got some ideas about what stories I’d like to hear but I need to know what matters to you. Because CFS is made up of Jesus and all of us.
One final thought: I hope that this report of mine won’t just gather dust on the shelf of a college somewhere but that it will be useful. But in any case this is our 10th year as CFS (we are 10 this autumn!!) and it would be great to put together some of these stories and publish them for any one of us to have as a way of celebrating and saying thanks to God for bringing us this far. So telling me your stories won’t just help me but will be for us all to share.

Home Mission Fund At our gathering back in November, we set a church budget for 2012. If you were there, you may remember how we did this using 10 oranges!! Quite a big chunk of our income as a church comes from our Baptist family of churches, who give us about £20,000 each year. We have to apply for this money every year and our new application will be sent in very soon. As everywhere, money is getting tighter and I encourage you to pray about this process – that we should continue to receive this grant, which enables us to keep going in the work God has called us to. Kezia Kezia has written to tell us her news, she has been on a camp with children to help them enjoy life and to learn about life skills and other issues. She is working with children's groups helping some children become advocats within their communities. Mersea Weekend 2012 Yes – it’s time to start thinking about the summer holidays! We have booked the campsite at Mersea for 13th to 15th July2012. So mark the date in your diary or on your calendar and start thinking about whether you want to come along! There will be a swimming session as usual and lots of chances to have some fun time with friends, get to know new people and learn more about God.There will be a booking letter coming out to everyone shortly, which will include more details and prices.

Six Book Challenge There are now 15 of us in the Six Book Challenge with Southend Libraries.You are welcome to join us at any time, just ask me for a registration form. The challenge is to read six books, poems, magazine articles – anything really! – by June 2012. Our next meeting will be at the Central Library on Saturday 11th February at 2pm.Nikki.

It will be very practical and interactive and tutored by our Retail Manager, Carla! This course is not accredited but you will receive a certificate on completion. New resourcesI hope you have enjoyed the “What if God was one of us?” resources we have used in January. Sitting-in on some of your group meetings I have seen/heard some very lively discussions about pictures of Jesus you love (or, indeed, not!). Starting next month, we will be using some videos that our good friend Phil Durrant has organised to help us think about baptism as the starting point of our life as disciples of Jesus. Then in March we will spend time preparing for Easter by thinking about the meaning of all that happened to Jesus in the days leading up to Good Friday and Easter Day. Ivan ( 07986 803420 )

Resource workshopWe recently ran a successful half-day practical training for friends in the church who wanted to explore how our group resources are put together – and the chance to have a go themselves. Yes, if any of you are in doubt, the new CFS bank account is now open with the strangely named bank "Charities Aid Foundation" (CAF).

Sunday 5th February Next Sunday I will be visiting Belle Vue Baptist Church in Southchurch to speak at their morning service at 10.30am and, as always, I’d be glad of any company from CFS friends who wanted to come along. Girls Weekend Friday 24th – Sunday 26th February 2012

The Girls weekend is booked for 24th -26th February. We are planning a low key, relaxed weekend where we can enjoy each other’s company while creating space for God to speak into our lives. We hope the weekend will be full of laughing, chatting, chilling and listening. It will be held in the Youth Hostel in Kent that we went to last year.
Our aim is that through the weekend we will all be able to connect with God no matter where you are on a journey with him. The weekend will involve watching films, wearing slippers, relaxing, eating, drinking tea and talking with friends. You can choose to add a walk in the country, shopping or some outdoor pursuits to that list if you want. If you have any questions about what the weekend will involve or you need help with cost please speak with your community facilitator, Rachel (07891 979189) or Alison (07759 072112).
The weekend costs £50 for those in families with a regular income or £28 for concessions. This includes all accommodation and food for the weekend. Please let Alison know if you want to come and give her a deposit of £10 ASAP. The full balance should be paid by the 19th February.
We hope you are just as excited as us about enjoying each other’s company and seeing what God might do in and through us

Just to let you know that, for various reasons, this has had to be postponed until later in the year.

Home Fire Safety Advice Essex Fire Services are offering a FREE home visit to give advice on how to be safe from fire in your home. If you want to have a visit, contact Ivan or Nikki who will put you in touch with them.

Saturday Singalong The next Singalong is on 3rd March, 10am to noon at Southend Central Library. We’re going to be singing Scarborough Fair by Paul Simon. It’s fun and free and you don’t have to be able to sing. Look us up on Youtube. Nikki.

At the start of a new year, a question. What is our raison d'être? What is our reason for being around?Are we here because of some huge cosmic fluke?

Are we here for a good time before we exit in a wooden box?

Or perhaps it is to have a family and leave behind children to keep the family genes alive for another generation?

Or is it to try and live a life which is pleasing to the God who created us in the first place?

The end of one year and the start of a new one truly is a great time "for another chance".If you are reading this Thought and feel a little sad when you think about your reason for being around, then you need to hear some good news! The good news is the one told in many churches up and down the land

You truly matter to God.

He designed you to be the person you are and He loves you for it

.Even though sin has got in the way between Him and you, He sorted out that problem too when Jesus died to answer for that sin.

For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

New Ways of being Church - Training day attracted lots of people from other local churches

On Saturday over 20 people from local churches came to a day of training by us and our friends on starting new forms of church. Thanks to Rick, Helen, and Dan D for helping. We explored stories of new forms of church and... What is a church? Why start a new church? How do you start one? in a day of teaching, games, discussion, group work and prayer.
Our next area training day for local churches is on 21st April and called: Christianity: I thought it would be more exciting than this.

We will be hosting a table sale at Shared Space where you can hire a table, back screen & get free tea/coffee all day for just £8.00 (much warmer than a boot fair). Practices for a New Jesus Movement - a second week to remember it all
1. Bible study - simple and regular discipleship by obedience to the Bible. - What does it say? - What does it say to me? - What am going to do about it?
2. Open houses - hospitable to visitors who came day or night.
3. Fringe focus - primarily people joined from the edges of society.
4. Simple habits - nothing took a lot of skill.
5. Good business products! - they lived from little businesses they ran together.
6. Rehabilitation - a building for rehabilitation of drug addicts, open to all, a place for refreshment.
7. Native flavour - not importing many songs from outside.
8. Daily rhythms - weekly services was not enough - some met daily for short times.
9. Not outreach TO but outreach WITH others - people of other faiths would hep them with their work with the poor.
10. Something for the whole family - outreach often started with a young person and reached the family by visiting.
11. Prayer - a normal part of ALL they did, many physical healings, supernatural was accepted as normal.
12. Grace - people failed and messed up but were relaunched again as disciples.
13, Changing lives - focus was intentionally on this and not growing in size which happened rapidly.

It’s that time again when we Girls can start getting excited about going away to spend time with each other and go deeper with God. This when we are booked to go back to the Youth Hostel in Kent that we went to last year. www.beyond400.net On Tuesday 17 January we and others start a conversation at this new web site. This year is the 400th anniversary of Baptist churxhes in this country and we're helping others to explore the topic, "Baptists re-imagining life after 400 years in Britain".

Girls Weekend Friday 24th – Sunday 26th February 2012

Les would like to thank Ivan and all those who helped to clear his loft before Christmas.

The Bible was sort of finished last week!.............Three years ago on New Year's Day, a group of twenty-two of us set out to read the entire Bible over three years. The way it worked was that most of us asked to get a daily email including the next chapter to read or listen to, and those 1000+ emails have been going out everyday from our system until we finished last week on New Year's Eve. Errrrr... but it wasn't really a case of 'we' finishing as so so far we only know of one person who finished it and several of you along with me have said they dropped out at some point for all sorts of reasons. So here's a question - In 2012, how can we let our lives be shaped by reading the stories of God in the Bible? God Bless, Peter

Calendars and address lists: Bruce has kindly sent these out by first class post last week. If you have not received one please ask your group leader or look on the front page of the website. On the front page there is a box of dates for the whole church, so please look at this first and make a careful note in your diary. Ivan

Children and youth: please pray for our children and youth activities starting again on Friday 13th January and for all students and teachers in the first fortnight of the new term. Further details from Alex 07791 617220 and Ivan 07986 803420.

Shared Space and Southend Libraries will be working together on the annual Six Book Challenge. This is a free scheme that invites people to pick six reads (not just books but poems, magazine articles, even digital games can count) and record their reading in a diary provided by the library service.

Readers receive a certificate on completion of the Challenge. So if you lack reading confidence or you just want to get back into reading – join us as we read, share our experiences, use the library and write our diaries.Both adults and children are welcome to join. Just ask for a registration form at the Shared Space counter or come to our first meeting onSaturday 14th January at 2pm at Shared Space.

Six Book Challenge

Come along and sign up to the Challenge at the launch on Saturday 14th January, 2pm at Shared Space. There'll be food and fun on the day! We will then have six months to read any six books or other items we want to. There will be prizes and certificates to celebrate our success! Simon from the library will support us with books and we can meet regularly to swap stories and our thoughts about the things we read. All ages welcome! If you want to join in but can't be there for the launch, please request a registration form from me. Nikki

Christmas Craft Activities
On Monday 19th we held a session of Christmas craft activities for children and their carers in the activity room at Shared Space. Fifteen children came along and made some lovely decorations and spread glitter far and wide! A good time was had by all and all the families were invited along to our Christingle service on Christmas Eve.
