Coming Up...

Do you like cake? Are you interested in whats been going on at Shared Space? If the answer to either of these ie YES then this is for you.....

The group that meets at Bruce and Alexs house are having a cake and coffee ( and tea, squash, cold drinks, hot choclate ) morning SATURDAY September 11th 10.30 - 12.30 at Shared Space. Sorry any men going to Forge Wood you will have to come next time! There will be lots of yummy cakes, a chance to chat and see how Shared Space has been transformed. As a group we have been finding out about the local charity Dove Project and have met one of the ladies who works there. There will be information about the Dove Project there on saturday and we would ask anyone who has cake and drink to make a contribution to the Dove Project.

Look forward to seeing loads of people - come and bring a friend or two or three...

Church from Scratch Monthly Gathering - Sunday 19 September 4pm

Centre Place Community, Prospect Close, Southend

We gather to worship, share and meet with God. All ages welcome. Bring food for shared tea. Go on make it healthy food. Lets up our life expectancy!

Church Birthday / Celebration / Launch of Shared Space: This will be on Saturday 2nd October, from 5-8pm at Shared Space, with fun, food and the chance to thank God for another year of being together as Church from Scratch. We will also welcome in Phil Durrant as he comes to work among us for the next 9 months. Do put the date in your diary now.

Church Planting 101 South East - 25th September

Join us on 25 September At Wood Lane Baptist Church Dagenham for Church Planting 101 - a one-day introduction to the subject.

Why plant churches? Who can be involved in this? Where is it happening, and where are new churches needed? How can we go about creating new communities that are good news locally? This day is being sponsored by CFS, Urban Expressions and the Incarnate network and Peter will be one of the trainers.

CFS News...

"THANK YOU" to all who have been at Shared Space over the last few weeks, it's starting to look really great and we are now on the final last days before the store opens September 13th (official opening to happen later).

If you have some free time, we could really use you your help:

Tuesday Sept 7th from noon - 5:00 pm for clearing and finishing

Thursday Sept 9th from 7:00 pm onwards; and for final clearing and finishing

Saturday Sept 11th from 10:00 onwards for sorting stock and setting up

DONATIONS welcome and can be dropped off at any of the above times, or next week.

If you are interested in VOLUNTEERING, and have not yet spoken to anyone, please contact either Kezia (07938 0456 905)or Catherine (07799 701 866).

Calendar: we hope to sending out a copy of the church calendar for Autumn and Winter later this week. The only big change from the last calendar is the date of the next church gathering (now Sunday 19th – see above).

News from the Thursday Night group at Rochford - we are now operating a book reading "club", the idea is that we all read a book and then meet to discuss it and see what we thought about it. We are reading Seriously Funny - Life, Love and God... musings between two good friends by Adrian Plass and Jeff Lucas. There are others in the church who are joining with us for this project - if you would like to read and join in then our next discussion date when we will talk about the book is Thursday 4 November 8pm at Shared Space - hope to see you there. News from Barry and Claire - their daughter Rosemary is pregnant and unwell - her blood sugar is high and unstable and she is having insulin 4 times daily. There is fluid around the baby's head and 6 - 8 weeks to go - please pray.

Shared Space is coming together - the walls are changing colour - it looks quite dramatic. Ceiling tiles are being washed floors cleaned. Thanks to all those who came on Sunday to help and to those who provided lunch!

There are more opportunities to help with the transformation - this Wednesday and Saturday see detail below - BE PART OF IT!

Forge Wood Men's Camping Weekend - contact Tim to book your place

September 10 - 12 2010

Join us!

Each time we go we experience the thrill of true wood camping, the smell of the campfire, long chats around the kettle, and meeting Jesus in a truly beautiful setting.

Forge wood is a privately owned wood in West Sussex. The Facilities are basic – this is a ‘back to nature’ experience. All food is prepared over an open fire and we camp among the trees. You can bring your own tent or borrow one of the church ones (mats and sleeping bags included). Food and drink is included.

This men’s weekend is open to any man who wants to spend some quality time with friends and get to know Jesus better.

The structure of the weekend is flexible and based around food, drinking tea, more food, chatting with each other, prayer, more food, songs around the fire, and more tea.

Put it in your diary. the cost is £20 if you are earning and £10 if you are not. Transport can be arranged or if you would like to drive let Tim know

As already stated the work on Shared Space has started The 1st coat of paint is on the wall, the electrics are being sorted, and the shop counter is part-way built. Attached to this newsletter are 2 powerpoint presetnations, one showing the before pitcures, the other the work in progress. It will be exciting to see the after pictures when we have done all the work. It may have escaped your notice that the pictures were not attached last week. This is due to the size of the powerpoint, we hop to get them onto the CFS web site so watch out for them there.

On Saturday we had close to 30 people drop by and help with the decorating and electrics and it's all starting to take shape. The 1st coat of paint is on the wall, the electrics are being sorted, and the shop counter is part-way build. We finished up the day with much needed pizza at Alison and Peters place.

A big thanks everyone for your hard work!

Sunday 22 August is the next opportunity to join in the project - 9.30 am - 4pm

Monday night group at Chantelle

We meet at Chantelle's house normally but last month we decided we'd take our 'out' week to Priory Park and joined Catherine and Annes group. We it was a lovely sunny evening and we all got bitten whilst collecting litter and praying for the people and places around us. The weather wasn't so kind for our evening at the beach this week. It rained all evening and we thanked God for beach shelters. We got together and talked about the different ways we can be part of changing the world the right way up. On both evenings we wanted to not be ashamed of what we believed in and in both places we got our bibles out and prayed.

Shared Space - help paint and do it up - this Saturday

Church from Scratch

A base for us to work with Southend, but first a load of work to get it ready!

Come along, 10am at the Shared Space premises, 453 to 455 London Road, Westcliff, across the London Road from the Palace Theatre bus-stop. We will be decorating and cleaning. If you can't come at 10am, come when you can.

Get in the Shared Space spirit and invite your friends from beyond CFS to help too. Lots to do, all welcome, wear old clothes. Bring sandwiches for lunch.

Afterwards come back to Peter and Alison's house at 5pm for food and chill - a couple of minutes walk away at 36 Cranley Road, Westcliff.

CFS News...

Maz has gone to Jordan

If you remember we spent an evening raising money to send Maz to Jordan - well Maz has arrived and is nearly half way through her time there. She is having an amazing time and wanted to let everyone know that God is working with the team. She has 15 students to teach and is learning so much each day. She loves the children and God is present in the classroom. She is teaching English in the morning and God in the afternoon. Maz would love to hear from anyone, by text only please, to know how you are getting on. Maz and the team have been blogging on a web site www.whygo.me so go and find out what they have been up to.

Shared Space

Hopefully the lease will be signed by this week, which means it will soon be time to get to work on turning it into shared space! Watch out for more info soon. We still really need your donations so that we'll have plenty of stock to open with. A number of our groups have been down to shared space to have a look and to help out - why not try to do that if you haven't already? Contact Ivan or Jon Brown to arrange it or to drop off things for shared space.

The Way

in the current cycle of The Way called 'us and them', we've been thinking about the world beyond Southend and thinking about how we can join in with Jesus in trying to put things the right way up again. These pictures show how some of the groups imagined what this might look like...

Coming Up...

CFS bike ride 24th July

It's time to get your bike out of the shed for the first CFS bike ride! On Saturday 24th July we'll be cycling to Paglesham - which is about 5 miles from Rochford. And don't worry, we'll be going at a relaxed pace so if you haven't ridden for a while it'll be ok! We'll probably set off late morning, have lunch there and look around before we come back again in the afternoon. If you'd like to come, let Kezia (07938 046905) or Alex (07791 617220) know - and then we can sort out where to meet en route once we know where people are coming from. Hopefully see lots of you then!

As you can see a great time was had be all at church camp at Mersea. Although from the next picture it looked to be exhausting!

Peter - Back from sabbatical

From this week I'm back from a couple of months sabbatical. With a final 2 weeks of sabbatical in November when I will be gathering together what I've been reflecting on. I've missed everyone loads, and at the same time it has been good to step back from day to day leadership in CFS for that time. Thank you for this opportunity to meet people around the country, pray, read and think.

Shared Space update,

We're hoping to be able to actually sign the lease for shared space this week - so we really need your donations now!

If you have items for shared space then please drop things off to Peter and Alisons ONLY on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 9am-5pm. If they want to drop off donations outside of those times please contact Jon Brown on 07590384113.

We urgently need donations now, it's a great time for everyone to have a sift through their wardrobes and fill a bag of odds and ends!

We urgently need donations now, it's a great time for everyone to have a sift through their wardrobes and fill a bag of odds and ends!

Update on Peter's sabbatical

Lots of you have asked, "How is it going?" as I've taken a couple of months out from leading in CFS. I thought I would find it hard to stop but I needed the rest and God has been good in providing Ivan and others to take forward our work of discipleship and mission. Here are some of the things I've been up to on sabbatical.

spent much bonus time with Alison, Matthew and Daniel :-)

a week in Northumbria with a community of monks

re-reading the biographies of Jesus in the Bible - Jesus is awesome! (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)

meeting up with Dan Gates from Clarence Road Baptist Church who I asked to be a sabbatical guide for me

visited people across the country including some you know: Phil Durrant who joins CFS as an Apprentice in September; Andrew Bevan who spent a summer with CFS; Angela Lucas who spent 2 years working with CFS on the Kursaal Estate. They all send their love to us.

bought a tandem canoe on Ebay - we've had her out on the estuary and Blackwater several times - it's been good to learn to play again.

read a pile of good books about Jesus, ways of being his church, how our world is rapidly changing, what following Jesus looks like...

spent a day a week volunteering at the Homeless Centre

had the time to get my bike out the shed, brush off the many cobwebs and use the car far less - I was hoping to get healthy and lose weight

eaten many meals with many people which has stopped me losing weight

endured England's world cup campaign

prayed and wandered the town and region around us, looking for the best ways to join in with Jesus, so his love, forgiveness and life reach far more people

building a wood fired pizza oven of bricks in the garden. When it gets finished you're all invited to a pizza party - it's proving to be a bigger job than I thought!

going to a church planting course in Birmingham

praying for you

After 10 years of non-stop church leadership it has been good to step back for a couple of months, and spend time with Jesus, resting, reflecting and refocusing. I'm looking forward to rejoining you for the future chapters.

I start back at our church summer camp on 16th July at Mersea Island. In the autumn I take a final 2 weeks of the sabbatical to gather together the insights for our walk with Jesus.

A big thank you to all who made the Youth Club World Cup evening such a success on Friday night. Thanks to Steve who sorted the aerial, Alison who arranged the decorations and Alex & Co who made sure we were well served with party food. This was a good opening for youth club parents to get to know the church. If only England had performed as well as the CFS team….

Shared Space update

Things are still looking good and we're on track to be able to sign the lease for the Shared Space premises in two or three weeks.

This means:

We need your donations now! It's time to have a clear-out! If you have good quality clothes, DVDs, CDs, children's toys/games, books, electronic items in good working order, etc - you can drop them off at 36 Cranley Road (Peter and Alisons's) and we'll store them in the shop. Thanks!

It's really important that we find the right manager soon - please have a think about whether this could be you or someone you know perhaps beyond CFS - they will need to have the retail skills to make the shop a success but also share CFS's values and have a heart for creating a place that will really be for people in Southend. Contact Ivan or your group leader for the full job description.

Although we haven't yet signed the lease, we have been given keys to the premises, so this means if you'd like to come and see the place, you can! It would also be great to start praying there, that we can make a difference in Southend.

CFS News...

Shared space update

We heard last week that CLOT have agreed to pursue a lease on the terms we've negotiated on the possible Shared Space premises - hopefully we'll be able to sign a lease within the next few weeks. We're also now looking for the initial manager for Shared Space - do you know someone who might be right for this? Speak to Ivan for more info.

We need you to:

start saving things we can sell when we open - as the trading part of Shared Space will be a charity shop

pray that we'll be able to sign the lease soon and find the right manager

get ready for some decorating pretty soon!

CLOT wants to thank everyone who's worked so hard on the Shared Space project in many different ways over the last few years - it's exciting that it looks like it's really about to happen!

A Christian couple known to Ivan and Nikki are looking for somewhere to live in the Southend area. As a minimum they need a double room. All Purpose Cleaner

This will last for a couple of months if you keep it in the refrigerator - using lemon.

cup of vinegar or lemon juice

1 tsp of liquid castile soap

10 drops of grapefruit seed extract (available from health food shops or online at Goodness direct)

20 drops of essential oil (this will delete the vinegar smell and if used there is no need to store it in the refrigerator).

Fill with cold water to the top of the container.

Exciting News!

Things are really starting to move forward with the shop premises which we hope will become Shared Space - we have struck a deal with the owners of the shop, and CLOT has approved this and agreed to ask a solicitor to sort out the lease. CLOT has also begun looking for the initial manager of the project - so hopefully it won't be long now til we're up and running!

Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard on the shared space project from the initial idea a few years ago up to this point - it's exciting that it's about to happen! Watch out for more news and details soon as they develop.

Tuesday into Friday - Group news

The Tuesday group, recently spent some time brainstorming looking where we are at and where we are going. We recognise

we are the only daytime group, therefore useful for those who want to dip their toes in and find out what CFS is about.

Initially we were a friday group difficult for some to attend it was changed to a tuesday, since that time members have moved on

to evening groups, (which is good) but has left our numbers depleted, we find it suits most to come back to friday,Invitiations are being delivered around the areas.

Please join us for lunch, (bring a friend) to share good company and conversation. There will be more publicity next week For more information now please contact Val Hulme.

Shared Space - we pray the time is near

8pm Tuesday 25th May - stick it on your calendar!

Things are moving quickly now with Shared Space - we're hoping to negotiate a lease for a possible premises later this week and will soon be looking to appoint a manager from within or beyond CFS to oversee Shared Space. Whether or not we get this particular premises, we definitely hope to open Shared Space in the next couple of months, and we will need your help to make it happen.

Once we have the premises we'll need lots of help with decorating and setting up the premises ready for opening, and after that we'll need lots of volunteers to help run it!

What an action packed weekend for CFS, on Saturday there was the quiz night for HARP which raised £285 - thank you to everyone who came and supported the Rochford group who organised it. On Sunday the monthly gathering was held in the morning sharing with the community at Westlciff Baptist Church. CFS provided the main course for approximately 100 people, so again thanks to everyone who contributed and to Alex particularly for all her hard work before hand and on the day

Send Maz to Jordan

Maz's fund-raiser evening was a great success on Saturday night. And it raised the rest of the money needed for her to spend 4 weeks in Jordan this summer. Maxz will be volunteering with an organisation called Middle East Christian Outreach (MECO). Thanks to all who helped and came. Maz is third from left in the picture. Ivan was the auctioneer for the unforgetable auction. The other two, Alex and Kezia, helped put on the evening. And where's Rick? He is probably still in the kitchen cooking that awesome Jordanian food. mmmmm...

Cluster meeting of Community Groups

The 3 community groups that meet on Thursday nights met together for the first time for a cluster last week. For a church which is so geographically scattered it was an opportunity for people in the same church to meet for the first time. Here's a picture taken after some had left... The Way Programme - "Free to Follow"

We are in the second cycle of 4 weeks in the Way Programme, and this cycle is called "Free to Follow". We're working at being freed from our hangups, addictions and experiences to follow Jesus. The Thursday (used to be Monday) night group that meets at Sally and John's house made t-shirts to wear, telling people how awesome Jesus is. Here's a couple of pics... if you know some of the people in CFS who's bodies do you think these are?!

When ChurchfromScratch started all those years ago one very kind lady agreed to act as our volunteer book-keeper, her name was Marion. She has faithfully kept our financial records all this time and has now decided to take a well deserved rest from all the paperwork. As a church we would like to say thankyou to Marion for all her hard work and dedication over the years and to wish her well for the future.

What: Fundraiser!

Maz (Marianne Freeman) is hoping to join the MECO missionary team to Jordan for a month this summer and needs to have a fundraising evening to cover the costs.
She would love it if you could come and join in.

A brief overview of the evening:
- Quick welcome talk and information on Maz, MECO and Jordan.
- Buffet. Chance to sample some Jordanian food as well as the English buffet.
- Auction. CFS members will offer skills to the highest bidder! Should be a laugh!

Strapped for cash? Not to worry! Please come anyway to find out more about Maz's plans - prayer is the most valuable support there.

It would be good if people could donate food for the buffet, gifts for the tombola, or offer your skills for the auction! There will be no admission fee, just buckets to donate throughout the evening.

The Labyrinth - Clarence Road Baptist Church, Clarence Road Southend

A joint venture with Clarence Road Baptist Church and in partnership with Churches in Central Southend.

In the week running up to easter expereince the Labyrinth. A journey of interactice exhibits, to walk through at your own pace as you explore the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Easter Sunday is on 4th April. This is the day when Christians celebrate that Jesus not only died for us on the cross BUT He now lives again and offers us a new way to live!

We at Church from Scratch will celebrate this on Easter Sunday by meeting at 10am at Alison and Peter's home,36 Cranley Road, Westcliff at 10 am. The first friends of Jesus found out what had happened when they talked with one another and we will share the good news together over breakfast.

I am sure that some of you will have family events later in the day, so we will have our breakfast and then the rest of the day will be free for us to take out the same good newsâ€" Jesus is risen! - to our families and friends.

 Safe to Grow Training.

If you are taking part in our Friday night youth events or considering joining the team it is important for you

 to have some training in Child Protection. There is a "safe to Grow" Training session at Canvey Island Baptist Church

on Saturday 10 April 9.30 - 1pm. There is no charge and there will be refreshments - if you would like to go

Don't forget it is important to leave a small carbon foot print as for most of us it is not possible not to leave one at all. Remember - ask you self, do I need this or is it just that I want it.

With Britain heading towards financial, moral and social bankruptcy, it is hard to be optimistic about the nation's future, admits J John, but in spite of all the gloom, he still sees rays of encouragement and hope.

In the latest edition of US magazine Charisma, the popular evangelist and author mulls over the shape of the church in Britain by 2020.

He predicts that the continuing decline in ‘Churchianity' will lead to "a void in which a genuine Christian faith will stand out clearly".

In place of formal, traditional and institutional churches, J John said mega-churches would become the new ‘cathedrals' in all the major cities and that there would be a rise in small, fluid fellowships.

While hedonism, consumerism and secularism will remain popular, there will be a growing realisation that they do not satisfy.

He predicted society would become "colder, more detached and increasingly virtual" and that the attraction of authentic, caring, Spirit-filled fellowships would be "compelling", the evangelist said.

He warned that the church would be left vulnerable to fads and heresies in the face of waning ‘book culture' and a loss of biblical knowledge. That would be balanced out, he said, by an increase in the number of Christians "who hold to God's word with new seriousness".

J John also predicted that the failure of ‘multicultural' philosophy and political correctness would turn some urban areas into ‘no-go zones' for evangelism but said there would be a growing number of Christians, churches and martyrs in these areas.

"It's not going to be boring! And God is still on His throne," he said.
